Poem: "Mismatched Cats"

This poem came out of the September 6, 2022 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] mama_kestrel.

"Mismatched Cats"

Cats are mighty hunters all,
Their camouflage superb,
Concentration so advanced
That nothing can disturb.

Tabby in the forest glen
Or gray beneath a hedge
Come to deal swift death to prey
Upon the twilight's edge.

Still what blends in one place, may
Not go so well elsewhere.
Little can be done about
Calicos on the stair,

Orange coat on summer grass,
Or white in woods, but oh --
Nothing is less stealthy than
A black cat in the snow.

This is so sweet! I do not have many "cat songs" in my mind, so this is appreciated on many levels.

My first cat, Dee, was a blue-point shelter kitty with quite a bit of Tonkinese. She had a lot of places to camouflage herself against in our house, because our house is largely carpeted in that particular greyish shade of carpet known as "1990s family housing". Sometimes she would fit herself into the angles of the stairway, her darker tail falling into the shadows, ears flattened so that you couldn't see her until you were practically on top of her. Then, a flash of glow-in-the-dark demon eyes, and away she went with a spring and a warble!
It's not cruelty, she would argue, but you can't help but tease house-apes, now and again!

Charming! My long-gone Loki was an orange tabby, and he looked like the photos of Saharan Sand Cats in National Geographic. He could blend in with most things that were stripy or spotty, and occasionally with a dark yellow blanket on my bed.

A documentary I once saw on TV talked about the sand cat, and showed how scrubby grassy plant stems make sand cats disappear.

Our black beauty Desti did, in fact, escape into the big blue room after a snowfall. The snow made her easy to track... to a clear spot under the deck. I think she was glad to get back inside.

grin

Black cats have other problems, of course -- she bends in all too well in the middle of the night when I'm trying to get to the bathroom.

Nope, you'll never lose a black cat in a snowstorm! XD And yes, calicos and torties stand out everywhere.

My tortie would probably say that she wants to be outstanding.

I love this!

My own house panther has excellent camouflage, as long as she closes her eyes. I think she forgets they reflect and Mom can always find her. :P

Here, you can play Find the Kitty:

Loiosh, an orange tabby, on a fox fur blanket. I swear he's there.

(the harness helps)

Then there was the cat I had -- a Holstein cat who blended in with NOTHING -- who was SURE you couldn't see him as long as he had his nose tucked behind a wrinkle in the carpet.
