ysabetwordsmithFolks have mentioned an interest in questions and conversations that make them think. So I've decided to offer more of those. The current batch features landrace gardening.
Landrace Gardening: Promiscuously Pollinated Tomatoes
In previous blogs I have written about landrace development projects that I have been working on for years. Today I am describing a project that is just beginning. I would like to convert my tomato population into a promiscuously pollinated landrace. A freely cross-pollinating population of tomatoes would greatly simplify the process of survival-of-the-fittest selection for families of tomatoes that thrive in my garden.

Wild-type tomatoes are promiscuously pollinating. Most domestic ones are heavily inbreeding. However, tomatoes come in extreme variety of colors, shapes, sizes, flavors, growth habits, and other traits. So creating a genetically diverse landrace is just a matter of finding traits your local pollinators will love and that can withstand the environmental challenges, then encouraging them to mix it up. Plants with more open flowers and plenty of pollen will attract more pollinators. Other good traits include simple flowers, non-fused anther cones, loose anther cones, and extended stigmas. Hairier plants do better in cold temperatures. If you can find a good base stock of landrace or open-pollinated tomatoes, then you can throw in other types with specific traits you want, and save the best results. I've listed a huge variety below.
