Several conferences relocate north of the border as Canadians refuse to travel to the U.S.

Travel to the U.S. from several countries has dropped recently, with Canada leading the pack: in April, the number of return trips among Canadians travelling to the U.S. plummeted by 19.9 per cent for air travel, and by a jarring 35.2 per cent for land travel.

I'm delighted to see this. I've been telling people for years that America isn't a safe place to visit, but it's much worse now than last year. In order to make improvements, there must be consequences for poor life choices. And while the people in power don't care who they hurt, they do care a lot about losing money.

Peace in exchange for land? For many Ukrainians, it's too painful to contemplate

KYIV, May 2 (Reuters) - Vitali Klitschko, the former heavyweight boxer who is now mayor of Kyiv, ventured last month into hazardous political territory: he delicately suggested in an interview that Ukraine might need to cede land to end its battle against Russia.
After a flood of angry online comments, he walked back his comments, saying on Facebook that "territorial concessions contradict our national interests and we must fight against their implementation until the last".

Here's a post about  HR 867, “the igo boycott act.”

Of course, it's obviously not just anti-American for violating personal freedom of choice, it's also anti-capitalist for violating freedom of doing business.

It's also completely pointless other than intimidating people.  All you have to do is A) keep your mouth shut about why exactly you are doing something and/or B) have some other reason besides the forbidden one for doing what you want.  It's how the bigots get around most requirements for diversity -- the smart ones always have some other reason for not hiring the person.  You don't like Israel's raging genocide?  Come up with some other reason to avoid buying things from them.  An unassailable one is "We prefer to buy American."

There's no need to have an open boycott, or conspiracy, if everyone is using the same playbook, in this case "genocide is bad and we don't deal with genocidal maniacs."  A discontiguous conspiracy will do the job.  And you don't have to surrender your ethics to anyone else, although you might want to keep them quiet while the country has its head up its ass.

This cartoon caught my attention.  I'm sure it's meant as a criticism, and is likely untrue.

Import the Poor, Export the Rich

However, a poor person can become a well-to-do person if decent work opportunities are available.  Immigrants in particular are highly inclined to start business which eventually create more jobs.  And they're practical folks.

Rich people don't work.  They just suck up resources.

It is much easier to turn a poor person into a contributing citizen than it is to make a rich person either decent or productive.  So I'd much rather have poor immigrants than rich loafers, because I know who is actually useful to have around.

Just in case the American foodstream experiences disruptions, here are some recipes for field corn and soybeans, two huge cash crops. Field corn may be ground into cornmeal or nixtamalized into hominy. Soybeans are most often used to make tofu but there are other options.

As forecast by people* who pay attention: the port of Seattle is empty. This will propagate to other US ports over the next few weeks due to transit time from China.

"[small business] paused a container shipment due this month after realizing the 145% tariff would add roughly $300,000 to the shipment’s original $200,000 cost"

Sometimes, it sucks to be able to see the future. >_< But I am pleased that, at least this time, other people have seen it too. Nobody in power is listening. They are stupid and will likely not realize there is a problem until A) they personally run out of things and/or B) riots occur over shortages. But it's nice not being alone in seeing the problem this time.

Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought.

To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears.

To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who control the fool.

To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen.

To be led by a liar is to ask to be told lies.

To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery.

Octavia E. Butler, Parable of the Talents

So when it comes to the current nonsense, a majority of people asked for it. >_<

Here's another example of deporting an American citizen, in this case a 2-year-old girl.  It's not actually a new problem, but the frequency is increasing.

Meet the new American refugees fleeing across state lines for safety

America is on the move. Hundreds of thousands of people are packing up boxes, loading U-Hauls, and shipping out of state in an urgent flight towards safety.
They’re being propelled by hostile political forces bearing down on them because of who they are, what they believe, or for their medical needs.
All are displaced within their own country for reasons they did not choose. They are the new generation of America’s internal refugees – and their ranks are growing by the day.

Gamers Nexus out there casually providing the best coverage of tariffs

Let’s say you’ve got a power supply. Let’s say it’s at 145% as a base unit, ’cause right now it probably is. That’s not the only tariff – that’s just one of them. Percentage aluminium by weight? You’ve got to figure that out, and you need to know where it came from, because that’s an additional tariff. Sometimes. Percentage steel by weight? Same question, same fluctuating situation. How the fuck do you figure out where the aluminium legs on a resistor came from?

FDA to suspend quality-control program for food testing due to staff cuts

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is suspending a quality-control program for its food-testing laboratories as a result of staff cuts at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), according to an internal email seen by Reuters.
The proficiency testing program of the FDA’s Food Emergency Response Network is designed to ensure consistency and accuracy across the agency’s network of about 170 labs that test food for pathogens and contaminants to prevent food-borne illness.
The firing and departure of as many as 20,000 HHS employees has upended public health research and disrupted the agency’s work on areas like bird flu and drug reviews. Donald Trump hopes to slash as much as $40bn from HHS.

Disturbing, but hardly a surprise.

You know who thought up a subscription-based defense model in his book Starter Villain? FUCKING ME THAT’S WHO. That smug fascist owes me a percentage. I won’t get it, of course and if I did get it I would donate that shit to all the “woke” things he hates so fast it would make his brain swim.

UK Supreme Court says legal definition of ‘woman’ excludes trans women, in landmark ruling

The United Kingdom’s highest court ruled that the legal definition of “woman” excludes trans women, in a case with sweeping consequences for how equality laws are applied.

Britain’s Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the definition of a woman in equality legislation refers to “a biological woman and biological sex,” sparking celebrations outside court among gender-critical campaigners but warnings it was a “worrying” development for transgender people.

Aside from the obvious abuse of transfolk, this also raises issues because biological sex is not binary. There's a whole handful of intersex conditions where outward appearance does not match chromosomes, hormones, etc. So exactly which part of "biological" do they mean, and what will they do when the parts point in different directions? Since they've just decided that a gender recognition certificate is irrelevant.

People are disappearing - it's real fascism here in the USA

At the meeting, Trump and Bukele, who is clearly doing Trump’s bidding, announced they would not bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia home, defying the U.S. Supreme Court.

That's the problem with electing someone who routinely operates above the law.  The law has little or no influence over what he does.  So what if it's illegal and impeachable?  People don't care.  They knew what he was when they picked him up, again.  They knowingly chose for things like this to happen.  So they don't get to pretend that they're surprised and upset about ti now.
