The best (and worst) U.S. cities for getting outside in 2024
Going outside more frequently has the potential to improve health outcomes along with your mental health and quality of life. But where you live impacts how easy and convenient it is to spend time in the great outdoors throughout the year.
There are many ways to make urban areas more appealing for outdoor activities, and thus, healthier places to live.
Look outside your home or any urban area that you like visiting.
Do you see trees? If not, plant some trees or lobby the city to do so. Trees do everything.
Do you see flowerbeds? If not, plant some flowers. Now is the time for planting fall bulbs for spring blossoms. Flowers help too. You get bonus points for native species! No permit? Seed bombs!
Do you see bike racks? If not, add some bike racks. They encourage biking, which has lots of benefits. No room on the sidewalk, but you have street parking? No problem! 1 car parking space = 10 bike parking spaces.
Do you see benches? If not, put out some benches, preferably under trees or other shady places. These have many benefits such as letting people rest and socialize. Here are some DIY bench plans.
Do you see a place where teen to adult people, not just small children, can move their bodies for free? If not, consider a pocket park, skate dot, or calisthenic station.
