Indigenous Peoples Day: Why it's replacing Columbus Day in many places

Columbus Day celebrations in the United States — meant to honor the legacy of the man credited with "discovering" the New World — are almost as old as the nation itself.

The earliest known Columbus Day celebration took place on Oct. 12, 1792, on the 300th anniversary of his landing.

But since the 1990s, a growing number of states have begun to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day — a holiday meant to honor the culture and history of the people living in the Americas both before and after Columbus' arrival.

Yeah, let's stop celebrating invasion and genocide. Here are some better ideas for Monday, October 14...

Do you eat chili peppers, chocolate, corn, potatoes, squash, tomatoes, vanilla, or other crops from the Columbian Exchange? Thank the Native Americans. Do you want to grow a climate-resilient garden? Look how many of the relevant cultivars are named for Southwest or Great Plains tribes.

Was planning on going out tomorrow to look for spices, invite myself to dinner at an Indigenous Person's house, kill them, and take their house. (sarcasm/dark humor)

Well, at least they're not making all the grade-school children wear grey clothes to school and make Pilgrim top hats and Native American feather headbands out of construction paper. My ancestors didn't dress entirely in grey, although wearing anything that would attract attention was an expression of the mortal sin of "vanity". (Did they make you read The Scarlet Letter in school? They hated the embroidress for creating beauty that could make a pious Puritan ignore God's laws!)

And I apologize to the descendants of the Wampanoag, whose stored food was stolen by my ancestors (who hadn't brought enough food for the long sea voyage). And many of the Pilgrims marrried, or otherwise set up housekeeping with, local Wampanoag natives, and couldn't pronounce the names of their family members. I am descended from John Howland, a young man who was employed as a secretary/assistant/whatever to one of the preacher men. One of Howland's sons went out into the woods for a while, and came back with a woman he described as his wife, and nobody could spell her name. They lived in the multi-family John Howland House , which is still a popular tourist attraction in Plimoth Plantation.

America did't have bluebloods; we just had Founding Fathers. So being a Mayflower descendant is like finding out you're actually eleventh in line to be Duchess of Poshbury. These days, it's nothing to brag about - colonists who stole food and land and murdered the natives. But they're my ancestors, so they deserve a bit of respect (for just uprooting their lives and moving to a foreign climate). And Ben Franklin recognized the treaty of the Nations of the Iroquois as the brilliant political document it was.
