Indigenous Peoples Day: Why it's replacing Columbus Day in many places
Columbus Day celebrations in the United States — meant to honor the legacy of the man credited with "discovering" the New World — are almost as old as the nation itself.
The earliest known Columbus Day celebration took place on Oct. 12, 1792, on the 300th anniversary of his landing.
But since the 1990s, a growing number of states have begun to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day — a holiday meant to honor the culture and history of the people living in the Americas both before and after Columbus' arrival.
Yeah, let's stop celebrating invasion and genocide. Here are some better ideas for Monday, October 14...
Do you eat chili peppers, chocolate, corn, potatoes, squash, tomatoes, vanilla, or other crops from the Columbian Exchange? Thank the Native Americans. Do you want to grow a climate-resilient garden? Look how many of the relevant cultivars are named for Southwest or Great Plains tribes.

And many of the Pilgrims marrried, or otherwise set up housekeeping with, local Wampanoag natives, and couldn't pronounce the names of their family members. I am descended from John Howland, a young man who was employed as a secretary/assistant/whatever to one of the preacher men. One of Howland's sons went out into the woods for a while, and came back with a woman he described as his wife, and nobody could spell her name. They lived in the multi-family John Howland House , which is still a popular tourist attraction in Plimoth Plantation.

It's good to tell the stories, even if the stories are not always good.
