This continues a discussion about solarpunk and the Chobani yogurt ad. Start with Part 1: Things I Like. Continue with Part 3: The Most Interesting Part and The Chobani Solarpunk Ad Part 4: So You Want to Live in Chobaniland.
Things I don't like about the Chobani ad, or find questionable:
* Why is there an electrical gadget hooked up to a tiny waterwheel? They're more efficient for things like pumping water, grinding grain, or other more direct applications. You can do a ton with water power, it'd be better to show that.
* OMG no, you do not let cows around your solar panels! They will scratch themselves on your expensive equipment and knock it out of alignment or break something. Look how much work it takes to set up something secure enough for cows to scratch safely. Come to think of it, one cow by herself won't be happy either, they're herd animals. You can, however, use the area around your panels as habitat for small wildlife (e.g. insects, birds). Sheep work for keeping the grass mowed. Similarly you could run chickens there, provided you chose a nonflying breed to keep them off the panels, or you kept them in chicken tractors.
* What is with the giant floating wind turbines? I am pretty sure that ground-mounted ones would be safer and more stable.
* I'm not sure about the wierd little dome-greenhouses on top of what look like silos.
* Why is there a flying bus? Because "flying car" is a Symbol of the Future that people adore, and will go on adoring until someone actually tries to market that and they realize that the asshole drivers who are a pain in two dimensions become utterly terrifying in three.
* Why is the child even being bused to school in the city instead of homeschooled or at least attending a local school? You'd have to reorganize the entire education system for that, it's designed to lock people into the closest school unless they pay extra for private. Hmm, unless the implication is a birthrate so low that the farm actually is in the city's school service area. But I doubt anyone thought that far ahead.
* There seem to be other children who are not leaving the farm for school. Perhaps the daughter needs a different program, or the families made different choices. Mostly likely, nobody thought through any logic behind this divergence.
* Flying delivery robots are appalling to me personally. They're energy hogs and a privacy and security hazard. This is a minority opinion nowadays.
* I'm not sure about the android. It seems to be a generic science-fiction robot for doing whatever humans want it to do. Not particularly plausible, but neither is it impossible. However, in order to serve in a general capacity, an android would require complex programming. Make sure you are not abusing it.
* The robotic fruit-picker is ridiculous from a practical standpoint. From an emotional standpoint, harvest is one the fun parts of farming. From an artistic standpoint, however, it's actually well chosen because it's all rounding and curving, which creates an appealing image. I also give it credit for being tall enough to harvest from a standard-size fruit tree. However, people are working on robots that will pick fruit.
* A transparent display outdoors is idiotic. It's hard enough just getting a computer tablet to be legible in sunlight; you have to pay extra for a tablet designed for outdoor use, and there aren't a lot of those to choose from.
* Lady, shut the refrigerator door already, you're letting the cold air out.

Date: 2024-10-18 08:27 am (UTC)The ducted airborne wind turbines are nod in the direction of Big Hero 6, which had a lot of them in various designs. But they are also a design that's being worked on. In effect they're balloon or ram type kite, that forms a duct for the wind turbine as well as acting as a aerodynamic lifting body.
Studies have demonstrated that they are more efficient than conventional wind turbines, not needing a huge tower to put the turbine up where the wind is more or less constant, they have a smaller footprint as a result, plus the ducting increases the efficiency of the turbine itself, so it can be smaller for a given wattage generated, saving on material costs and reducing the environmental impact. Also the shape of the ducting kite/balloon also reduces the number of bird strikes.
As for the flying bus and the daughter being bussed to school..maybe the kid is advanced enough she's going to the local technical collage in town? Upon consideration, a flying bus makes somewhat more sense than flying cars... less idiots in the air. It appears to be a convertible as well, capable of ground transport. So perhaps it only switches to flight mode where the roads aren't suitable. A farm would prioritise fields over roads, so rather than take the bus off road or on a dirt track, it made a short hop.
As for the android/robot..looked more like a scarecrow to me, just one designed to look like a sci-fi robot and only capable of limited movement. I could see someone making that as a joke.

>> But they are also a design that's being worked on.<<
I did not know that.

Okay, ramscoops I have some familiarity with, that's useful.

Point.

It does look like they have dirt roads for the farm-to-market grid.

It seems more functional in the feast scene.
