Challenge #4

In your own space, add something to your fandom’s canon. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

If you got the opportunity to add one thing to the canon of any of your fandoms, what would that be? Maybe there’s a character who didn’t get much of a backstory/storyline and you’d like to do something with them, maybe a show was axed too soon and you had thoughts on what could happen in a subsequent season, maybe there’s a new episode you’d like to have added.

Tony Stark is a blacksmith. Now, we see part of this in movie canon: we see him banging out the Mark I Iron Man suit by hand, with a hammer (in a cave ... with a box of scraps).

What canon says nothing about is how he can actually do that. This is where I derive in, extrapolate out. Because the scene appears in the movie, Tony must be a blacksmith. Therefore, he had to learn those skills somewhere, somewhen, somehow. But blacksmithing isn't a skill you can learn solely from a book. You have to earn those muscles by hitting things really hard with a hammer, for months. And if you don't want to burn your damn hands off, it's better to have a teacher. In order for Tony to be able to do what he did in the movie, he not only had to learn that trade, he had to maintain it by doing it regularly, all those years.

What I added is that Tony apprenticed as a blacksmith one summer, to piss off his father. Because how else could a poor little rich boy learn a dirty, manual trade like that? I give you "What Little Boys Are Made Of." (This belongs to the series Love Is For Children, but it stands alone well.)

This makes me super happy. I've loved this story since I first read it. I stuck the link in my memories so I can re-read it. I've got it in my book marks on AO#, but this will be easier.

Awesome. Thank you. You know how much I love Love Is For Children. I should re-read it this year. I should do a lot of things this year. :-) I'm already a week being reading books this year. My bad.

Wow, that's an excellent point! And blacksmiths aren't the easiest thing to find these days, or even back when Tony would have been in a position to learn. It would take a lot of effort on his part to find one.

This is great!! I never thought about Tony blacksmithing, but it definitely took a lot of specific skills to make that first suit.

Yes, Tony always seemed incredibly strong in those scenes, but I just assumed fancy rich boy had a personal trainer. The combo of skill and the muscle to do the specific things he did lends itself to a much more interesting back story though!!
