This year during Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, I'm writing about goal-setting frameworks for [community profile] goals_on_dw. Read Part 1: Introduction to Goal-Setting Frameworks, Part 2: The 1-3-5 Rule, Part 3: The 12-week Year, Part 4: ABCS (Achievable, Believable, Committed, Specific), Part 5: Backward Goal, Part 6: BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goals), Part 7: BSQ (Think Big, Act Small, Move Quick), Part 8: CLEAR (Collaborative, Limited, Emotional, Appreciable, Refinable), Part 9: Goal Pyramid, Part 10: Golden Circle, Part 11: GROW (Goal, Reality, Options, Way Forward), Part 12: HARD (Heartfelt, Animated, Required, Difficult).

Part 12: HARD (Heartfelt, Animated, Required, Difficult)

If other goal-setting frameworks feel too easy for you, choose HARD goals. That stands for Heartfelt, Animated, Required, Difficult. Heartfelt goals stir your passion and connect with your deep feelings. Animated means you can visualize yourself living the outcome so much that if you didn't get there, you'd feel like something was missing from your life. Required speaks to a sense of urgency and necessity, that this goal is more important than anything else you could be doing with your time and energy. Difficult means that pursuing this will make you exert maximum effort for maximum return.

These features make the HARD goal approach ideal for major life accomplishments such as earning a college degree, buying a car, owning a home, getting married, or starting a family. Of course, it can also work in business contexts, like inventing something or becoming an entrepreneur. This system also appeals to people who feel that "realistic" goals are too easy and boring to bother with -- it's stuff you'd do anyway.

First, choose something that you really need and that is difficult to attain. Don't bother with things that you merely desire or that are too easy. This is where HARD goals really shine for milestones in life. If you want to have a large family, then you need to find a partner, be able to support or at least contribute to a household, and conceive or adopt children. Alternatively, you might want to pursue self-sufficiency or fight climate change or some other epic endeavor that drives you.

Second, examine your motivation. It can be intrinsic (from within) or extrinsic (from without). You will likely do better with intrinsic motivation as it is more powerful, but some people respond well to extrinsic, so know yourself. Choose a goal that really excites you, because this will demand a great deal of work over a long timeframe.

Third, immerse yourself in visualization. Imagine yourself pursuing and achieving your goal. Use all your senses to craft these scenes. This step appeals to people who like to make mind maps, idea boards, videos, or other visual aids to support their efforts. Once you have your goal firmly in mind, and well visualized, then you can work out how to get from here to there.
